CostsThe price picture for a protection dog, with Colorado line items
Prices vary so widely that a single number would mislead. We only quote sources and flag what we could not price.

What outside reports say
A 2019 CNBC story quoted one high-end provider as charging $30,000 to $80,000 for highly trained dogs, averaging about $50,000 (CNBC report). Insurify, writing about Belgian Malinois, says puppies from breeders start around $1,200 and can rise past $9,000 for show or breeding lines (Insurify). These are examples from other publishers, not quotes from us.
Colorado line items we can source
| Item | What the source says |
|---|---|
| Dog license in Denver | $15 for one year, $40 for three years, $150 for life (Denver); other cities set their own fees |
| Rabies vaccination | Required for a Denver license; counties may require it under C.R.S. 30-15-101 |
| Homeowners or renters insurance | Breed cannot be the reason for refusal or a higher price under HB25-1207; ask about liability terms |
| Training and lessons | Ask for an itemized written quote; we did not find a sourced Colorado range |
Reading a low price
Months of work go into a trained dog. If a quote seems far below those reports, ask which part of the training or health testing is missing.
