What you will find here

Most buying advice assumes a flat suburb and a mild climate. A Colorado owner may be hiking above a trailhead at dawn, sharing a fence line with a coyote den or renting a townhome whose lease says nothing about dogs. This guide takes those cases one at a time and links each statement to the agency that published it.

It is a reading resource. This website does not sell dogs, and the form at the end sends a request to K9PN, a referral service.

Where to start

The law

Bite liability, the dangerous dog statute and what counties and cities can add.

Trails and wildlife

Leash rules in state parks and what Colorado Parks and Wildlife says about dogs near lions and coyotes.

Home and insurance

What the 2025 breed-insurance law does and what it leaves alone.

The seller

Which Colorado businesses may need a PACFA license and how to look one up.

How a referral works

You describe your household and ZIP code. K9PN forwards the request to a professional covering your area, who then contacts you. K9PN does not choose a dog for you, name a particular kennel here or promise any result. Continue only if the conversation feels right.

Fast answers

Does this site sell protection dogs?

No. It publishes buying information. The request form goes to K9PN, which refers people to professionals and does not breed, sell or train dogs.

Can an insurer refuse me because of my dog's breed in Colorado?

A 2025 law, HB25-1207, bars insurers from refusing or raising the price of a homeowners or dwelling fire policy because of breed. A dog known or declared dangerous is carved out.

Are dogs allowed on every Colorado state park trail?

No. Parks set their own limits. For example, Cheyenne Mountain State Park allows leashed dogs on about two miles of designated trails only.

Is a breeder license required to sell a dog here?

Some operations may need a state PACFA license, depending on volume. Read the PACFA licensing categories and ask the seller.
