Your questions

Who is responsible if my dog seriously injures someone in Colorado?

Under C.R.S. 13-21-124, the owner can be sued for economic damages after serious bodily injury or death, with listed exceptions. Ask an attorney how it applies to you.

What makes a dog "dangerous" under state law?

C.R.S. 18-9-204.5 covers dogs that injure or kill, show tendencies a reasonable person would find threatening, or are involved in animal fighting.

How long can my leash be in a state park?

Colorado Parks and Wildlife says six feet at most, and the dog must be under control. A dog dragging a leash does not count as controlled.

Can I bring my dog on every trail?

No. Parks differ. Cheyenne Mountain State Park limits dogs to designated trails, for example.

What does CPW say about dogs and mountain lions?

It suggests leaving the dog home in the backcountry, using a six-foot leash on trails and supervising pets outside at dawn and dusk (CPW).

Can my insurer drop me over a breed?

Not for breed alone under HB25-1207, effective August 6, 2025, though known or declared dangerous dogs are excluded.

Do all dog sellers in Colorado need a state license?

No. PACFA says a business "may need" one, and breeders are counted by litters or dogs transferred. See the categories.

Does altitude change how I care for my dog?

We could not find official Colorado guidance on this, so ask your veterinarian.
